Biblical Counseling

Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (SWBTS)

Interested in developing or improving your counseling skills? In this course you will learn how to accurately handle and apply the Word of God as you provide counsel. This training is offered through Southwestern Theological Seminary and provides a great foundation for those desiring to become equipped as a Biblical Counselor. Completion in this course will result in a Certification in Biblical Counseling from SWBTS. The course is taken in 4 sessions during the months of April, May, June, and July. These sessions are on Thursday and Friday evenings from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm and on Saturday from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm. Students will learn the following:

 

The Theological Basis for Biblical Counseling

            -Doctrine of Scripture

            -Doctrine of Man

            -Introduction to Biblical Counseling

 

The Biblical Counseling Task

            -Doctrine of the Church

            -The Counselor and Counselee Relationship

            -Process of Biblical Change

 

Ministering the Word

            -A Deeper Look at Ephesians, 1 Corinthians, and Matthew 28

            -Discipline and Confrontation

 

Biblical Perspectives in Counseling

           -Unbiblical Thinking

           -Medicine and the DSM-5

           -Life Dominating Sins

 

The Methodology of Biblical Counseling

            -Data Gathering and Asking Questions

            -Legal/Ethical Issues

            -Marital Counseling

            -Homework

            -Grief and Crisis Counseling

 

Capstone Class

            -Counseling Scenarios and Case Studies

            -Extensive Questions and Answer Periods

 

Textbooks: There are two books that are required for the class and will be available at the beginning of the class.

Instructors: Dr. John Babler and Dr. T. Dale Johnson

 

Costs: $660 (payment options are available and a limited number of scholarships)

 

Additional Information: In addition, students will be involved in discussions of case study material, practical application, role plays, and a Biblical overview of the importance of marriage and family. There are other advanced training opportunities available through Southwestern Seminary.

 

Note: Students must attend all four sessions in order to receive a Certificate of Completion for the course.
